How To Improve Your Creativity
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’d had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people…A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem.”- Steve Jobs
75% of people think they are not living up to their creative potential in today’s society (Parekh). Meaning that a mass majority of people are showing up to work day after day with the ability to express new innovative ideas that could take projects in a completely new direction but are not speaking up. We agree with Steve Jobs that (a big part) of creativity is connection. It’s essential to give employees the proper tools and encouragement to keep creative connections strong. We have put together this fun-filled list of things to do when your creativity tank is running low.
Draw Inspiration From Others
Whether you are listening to TED Talks or a new podcast, listening to other ideas helps one to gain an entirely new perspective. Looking into these informative types of audio can also help you explore subjects you may not even be aware of. This will help you break your everyday routine with ease and expand your mind.
Discover Something New
Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn another language, or how to draw or perhaps learn some new dance moves. Make time to pursue your curiosities. Taking the time to step outside of your comfort zone will give you a new perspective. Also, doing something to activate a different part of your brain can only help you produce new innovative ideas.
Completely Unplug
Sit back and relax, sometimes the best ideas come when you least expect them. Completely unplugging yourself, turning off your phone, and all other electronics and taking some time for yourself can help jump start your creativity. It could even come as easily as happening in your sleep. A good night’s rest is key to rejuvenating the creative side of your brain.
Take a Trip
Take a well-deserved vacation – or just a day off – go somewhere new and explore a different place. Take a break from your daily routine and take advantage of opportunities to work in different areas of the office periodically. The change of scenery will help those creative juices start flowing.
Brainstorm
Get a daily journal and take the time each day to exercise your creative muscle. Write down everything that comes to mind during your session and then try to clean up the mess of ideas that are sporadic on the page. Doing this daily exercise will accustom your brain to seeing everyday things through a new lens.
Everyone can be creative, with a little bit of practice. It’s up to you to exercise ideas you have and adapt them to your practice. Remember not to get discouraged. Creativity should be fun – so go ahead, learn, and explore without any pressure to have the next groundbreaking idea. It will come in its own time.
